Certification, explained

"Get it certified" sounds simple. In practice it means different things in different markets — sometimes a self-declaration you sign yourself, sometimes a third-party lab test, sometimes both, plus a local representative you may not have thought about.

The basics

Four ideas that decide your whole plan

Mandatory vs voluntary

Mandatory marks (FCC, CE, CCC, PSE…) are legally required to sell. Voluntary ones (ENERGY STAR, ENEC, ETL as an alternative to UL) are often demanded by retailers, insurers or procurement — so in practice they're "expected".

Self-declaration vs third-party

CE and UKCA are largely self-declared by the manufacturer using harmonised standards. FCC SDoC is similar. But FCC Certification, UL/ETL (NRTL), CCC, KC, BIS and most radio approvals require an accredited body's certificate.

You usually need a local representative

The US requires an FCC Agent. The EU needs an EU Responsible Person (GPSR). Canada, Korea, India, Brazil, Mexico and Taiwan generally require a local entity to hold the certificate. Plan for this early — it's often the long pole.

Timelines and cost are ranges, not quotes

A simple EMC test can be weeks and a few thousand dollars; a wireless device with radio + safety + battery spans months and several labs. Medical devices and machinery are longer still. Use our ranges as planning numbers, then get firm quotes.

Our accuracy promise

Every entry links to the official authority (fcc.gov, ec.europa.eu, gov.uk, mic.go.jp, kats.go.kr, bis.gov.in, anatel.gov.br and others). Regulations change — we review these pages against official sources and update them when rules move. Still, treat this as a starting map, not the final word: confirm with the official link and a qualified professional before you ship.
